Dussehra: The Triumph of Good Over Evil
Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the most significant Hindu festivals celebrated across India. It marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Falling on the tenth day of the Navratri festival, Dussehra holds immense cultural and spiritual importance.
During the celebrations, large effigies of Ravana, along with his brothers Meghnath and Kumbhkaran, are set ablaze, reenacting the final battle from the epic Ramayana. This act symbolizes the destruction of negative forces. People also worship weapons and tools on this day, in a ritual known as "Ayudha Puja," especially in parts of South India.
The festival is not only a reminder of moral values but also a time for reflection on personal battles against challenges, encouraging everyone to strive for righteousness. Dussehra paves the way for Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrated 20 days later, marking the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victory.
Celebrated with grandeur through fairs, plays, and fireworks, Dussehra is a festival of hope, renewal, and faith, signifying that no matter how strong the darkness, the light of good will always prevail.
After Dussehra, we celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, which falls 20 days later. Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victorious battle with Ravana and his 14-year exile in the forest. People light lamps (diyas) to guide Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshman back to their kingdom, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. The festival also signifies the return of hope, joy, and prosperity.
During Happy Diwali, homes are decorated with colorful rangoli, lights, and diyas. Families exchange sweets and gifts, and fireworks light up the night sky. In many regions, Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, is worshipped on this day to invite good fortune. Diwali is not just a celebration of external lights but also a time to ignite inner positivity and remove negativity from our lives, reinforcing the universal message of goodness prevailing over evil.
